Overview

The Intelligent Edge of the Smart Grid

image

AetherNEXUS™ is the next-generation Data Concentrator Unit (DCU) and Smart Gateway engineered for modern Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). It brings computation, security, and real-time intelligence to the very edge of the distribution grid—where data matters most.

AetherNEXUS™ is the strategic bridge between thousands of smart meters in the field and the Head-End System (HES), enabling secure, reliable, and scalable metering networks.

Key Benefits

01

Multi-Layer Edge Intelligence

Built on STM32MP131/MP21x MPU with on-device analytics, NILM extensions, and predictive monitoring.

02

Universal Communications Hub

Modular PPM-1/PPM-2 design supporting PLC, Hybrid-PLC, LoRa, Wi-SUN, Zigbee, LTE/4G/5G, Ethernet, RS-485, CAN, and more.

03

Seamless HES Integration

Operates as a secure outbound client; does not require public IP exposure when using cellular networks.

04

Carrier-Grade Security

DLMS/COSEM application-layer encryption + IPSec/VPN tunnels, certificate authentication, ACL whitelisting.

05

Designed for Harsh Environments

Wide voltage tolerance, industrial-grade EMC/surge protection, supercapacitor backup, and remote lifecycle management.

06

Future-Proof Modularity

Prepared for DER integration, EV charging, rooftop solar, and distributed energy intelligence.

What AetherNEXUS™ Does

Field Data Collection & Edge Processing

AetherNEXUS™ connects to large meter populations via PLC, RF or RS-485 and handles:

- Scheduled and instant readings
- Load profile (LP) aggregation
- Local firmware distribution
- Event filtering and correlation
- On-device anomaly detection

These edge functions reduce backhaul traffic and improve real-time responsiveness.

Secure & Reliable Uplink to HES

AetherNEXUS™ provides secure outbound communication to the Head-End System using:

- Public cellular networks
- Private APN deployments
- Ethernet or fibre links
- IPSec / VPN tunnels
- Encrypted DLMS/COSEM sessions

This ensures reliable operation behind NAT and fits modern HES microservice architectures.

Distributed Intelligence for the Modern AMI

The gateway enables edge-driven intelligence, including:

- Abnormal consumption detection
- Local estimation and optimisation
- Outage and restoration signalling
- Predictive maintenance triggers
- Data caching during communication loss

These capabilities strengthen AMI resilience and enhance operational decision-making.

Network Architecture Compatibility

AetherNEXUS™ supports all major AMI deployment models:

image

Public Network Mode

DCU operates as a client (no inbound ports, no public IP needed). Ideal for 4G/5G deployment.(Reference: NAT behaviour of DCUs on cellular networks)

image

Private APN / Utility Network Mode

Bidirectional communication via fixed APN IP ranges.

image

VPN / Reverse-Tunnel Mode

Used for secure remote maintenance without exposing the DCU to public internet. These topologies reflect global best practice in AMI deployments.(Reference: Typical HES–DCU communication topologies )
